Small Steps Lead To Big Change

Who would have thought that forming new habits can be as easy as stacking a pile of interrelated books?

James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, gave us enough evidence to support that while babies are a fresh slate and have more neurons than adults, it is adults by way of forming stronger synaptic connections, can prune and cultivate habits and skills according to choice.

“Habit Stacking” is forming a new habit on an already preexisting formed habit by using behavioral connectedness. In short, using your own rhythm to advantage by forming the basis to add on another. Again, small changes can lead to bigger shifts when done repeatedly, till they become part of system.

It is also important to note that it’s better to insert “related” habits into a schedule to make it easier to implement and also to insert them at the right time and place according to your lifestyle. It is a good idea to list down your entire days activities and try to insert a small habit that can lead to desired change in the long run.

When new habits grow from familiar ones, they feel natural and not forced and overtime these small acts become rituals. Something as simple as offering gratitude when you open your eyes first thing in the morning, can change your stance towards the days outlook. See what works and inspires you!
