A Beautiful Mind in a Typical World
The world is home to approx. 8.2 billion of us. Each one of that humongous number is unique and yet we can still be broadly classified into neurotypical and neurodivergent according to how our internal wiring interacts with the world.
In a world that is “typically” neurotypical, it is the neurodivergent that bring fresh take and new perspective to workplaces, communities and societies. Be it their out of the box thinking, pattern recognition or authenticity they add value to a system by their persistence and charm. While making space for themselves, they redefine the boundaries. And that’s not easy. Environments were not designed keeping them in mind. What is natural to the vast majority, can be overwhelming and draining for the neurodivergent mind leading to sensory overload, misunderstandings, fatigue and burn outs. Constantly trying to fit into a noisy, rigid, inconsistent world- be it schools, work places or societies, can lead to loss of brilliance.
And it matters. Neurodivergent mind should not feel the need to shape shift and carry a silent struggle daily. When we understand neurodivergence, we stop trying to “fix” or “change” people who don’t fit in our perspective of “typical”. Instead, we build and provide spaces and systems that are supportive for wellbeing of every type of diverse individual. When any individual feels supported and safe, they don’t just thrive, they elevate the very space they are in. For any community or organisation to grow and flourish, it is important to understand that everyone cannot be put in the same mould. It is important to create awareness and spaces for each type to thrive in their respective brilliance. Because, wellness isn’t ‘one size fits all’
